From Blackmail to Buffoonery: How Sahara Reporters Turned a Social Media Meme into “Breaking News”
The world is currently watching Venezuela with bated breath following the January 3 capture of Nicolás Maduro. But while the global community focuses on the actual transition of power to Interim President Delcy Rodríguez, a section of the Nigerian media has decided to retreat into a hall of mirrors.
Specifically, Omoyele Sowore’s Sahara Reporters has once again demonstrated a staggering level of cluelessness by reporting a satirical post as a major diplomatic shift.
The New Low: When Memes Become News
On January 11, 2026, President Trump shared a screenshot on Truth Social of a Wikipedia page page cutout that had been edited to list him as the “Acting President of Venezuela.” To anyone with a modicum of media literacy, it was a classic piece of Trumpian “trolling”, a mere digital flex intended to signal U.S. dominance during the ongoing venezuelan transition.
However, Sahara Reporters didn’t see a joke; they saw a headline. By lifting this content and directly presenting it as a formal declaration, they have proven that in their newsroom, memes are now news. The fact that a supposedly “investigative” outlet would copy-paste a parody post without verifying it against the actual legal reality in Caracas is a terrifying indictment of the state of Nigerian journalism.
The Sowore Legacy: From Propaganda to the “Current Ruins”
For many Nigerians, this is a “deja vu” moment. The “cluelessness” we see today isn’t an accident; it is a refined tactic. Let us be honest a bit: Omoyele Sowore and Sahara Reporters played a pivotal role in bringing the APC government to power. Through a relentless campaign of what can only be described as media blackmail and coordinated propaganda, they systematically dismantled the Goodluck Jonathan administration (Sahara Reporters was allegedly taunted as the Media Arm of the APC). By laundering unverified claims and sensationalizing every move of the Goodluck Jonathan government, they helped install the very political structure that has led Nigeria to its current state of economic, social and security ruin.
Is Trump the Savior, or is Propaganda the Real Enemy?
There is a segment of the Nigerian public and the world as a whole that looks at Trump’s decisive actions in Venezuela (Operation Absolute Resolve) and sees a “savior” figure who could solve Nigeria’s deepest problems (Insecurity – Recent Airstrike against Terrorist in Sokoto). However, the Venezuela saga proves that Nigeria’s biggest problem isn’t just a lack of “strongman” leadership; it is the culture of fake news and propaganda that platforms like Sahara Reporters have institutionalized.
When a media house can be “fooled” by a Meme joke, it isn’t just an error, it is a weaponization of ignorance. They use these “joking” posts to drive a narrative of chaos, the same way they used propaganda to destabilize Nigeria’s democracy a decade ago.
A Recap of Deception: The Sahara Reporters Hall of Shame
To understand the current “Acting President” fake news, we must remember the history of fabrication used to blackmail the Jonathan administration:
- 2013: The China Trip Extravaganza: During Jonathan’s strategic visit to China to secure $1.1 billion in infrastructure loans, Sahara Reporters alleged “massive hotel rentals” and excessive luxury. The Presidency was forced to rebut these claims, proving the trip was a national interest mission, not a “luxury junket.”
- 2014: The Gold-Plated iPhones: In a peak moment of “photoshopped journalism,” Sahara Reporters published images of gold-plated iPhones they claimed were distributed as souvenirs at the wedding of Jonathan’s foster daughter. They were later forced to apologize and admit the photos were fake.
- 2022/2023: The ₦100 Million APC Form: As recently as 2022, they claimed Jonathan had secretly submitted a nomination form to the APC. His media team had to issue a categorical denial, calling the claim an “insult” and a total fabrication.
If Nigeria continue to let “sarcasm pages” dictate our national headlines, we are doomed to remain in the ruins that propaganda built.
