FACT-CHECK: No, the DOJ Did Not Release Any Document Linking Simon Ekpa or IPOB to a “Christian Genocide” Campaign

The ‘DOJ/IPOB Christian genocide’ claim spread too quickly. Across Facebook pages, and X threads, people (APC Data Boys) began circulating a dramatic allegation: that the U.S. Department of Justice had released or leaked documents exposing Simon Ekpa and IPOB as masterminds behind a “Christian genocide campaign” aimed at influencing Donald Trump’s decision on Nigeria, especially labelling Nigeria as a ‘Country of Particular Concern’.

It’s the kind of false allegation and propaganda designed to ignite outrage. It touches religion, politics, ethnicity, diaspora activism, and U.S.–Nigeria relations all at once. But like many viral narratives that thrive on shock value, this one is rendered dead-on-arrival and collapses the moment the facts are examined.

And the truth, unopposed, quiet and stern, is this: (DOJ IPOB Christian genocide claim)

No such DOJ document exists. Not officially. Not unofficially. Not leaked. Not hinted at. Not referenced anywhere in U.S. government records.

For a rumor so bold, the evidence is strikingly absent.

How the FAKE Story Unraveled

When we rightly investigated the origins of the claim, a completely different story emerged.

The U.S. Department of Justice does NOT issue reports on international religious persecution. It does not declare countries guilty of genocide. And it certainly has no record whatsoever accusing IPOB or Simon Ekpa of orchestrating propaganda campaigns targeted at the U.S. government.

Why the Claim Falls Apart

A narrative this serious should come with solid evidence. It doesn’t. However, here are the points that stand out:

  • There are no DOJ documents mentioning Simon Ekpa or IPOB anywhere in connection with genocide narratives.
  • The DOJ is not the agency responsible for evaluating religious persecution abroad. That role belongs to the U.S. Department of State and USCIRF (United States Commission on International Religious Freedom).
  • Trump’s statements about Nigeria were based on official State Department and human-rights report and absolutely not separatist lobbying material.
  • No U.S. agency report cites IPOB or Ekpa as influencers on U.S. foreign policy decisions regarding Nigeria.

The deeper we dug, the clearer it became: the claim isn’t built on evidence, it’s built on repetition from the APC Media thugs, popularly known as Data Boys.

A Crisis Manufactured in the Echo Chamber

Part of what makes this rumor so persistent is how effortlessly it plays into existing tensions. Accusing IPOB or Simon Ekpa of fabricating genocide narratives is politically useful to some actors. For others, it’s a way to frame U.S. policy as manipulated. For many, it’s simply sensational, hence, easy to believe, easier to share.

But misinformation doesn’t need to be true to be powerful. It only needs to sound believable, dramatic, and emotionally familiar.

And once a lie begins to trend, the truth has to work twice as hard, although the truth will always prevail as it remains constant.

The Real Verdict

After reviewing U.S. federal records, media reports, human-rights documentation, and the history of IPOB’s interactions with U.S. agencies, the conclusion is simple and unambiguous:

There is no document (no memo, no leak, no file) from the U.S. Department of Justice that links IPOB or Simon Ekpa to any “Christian Genocide” propaganda effort.
None influenced Donald Trump’s stance on Nigeria.
None shaped the Country of Particular Concern designation.

What exists is a rumor, inflated into “fact” by repetition, emotion, and political convenience.

And like most viral misinformation, the only thing it exposes is how vulnerable our public discussions have become to sensational, evidence-free claims.
