The Youth Awakening: From #EndSARS to #OccupyNASS 2026
The streets of Abuja are vibrating today with a familiar, yet evolved, energy. For years, the Nigerian state has operated under the assumption that the resilience of its youth is a finite resource. That it can be broken by force or outlasted by time. But as thousands gather at the National Assembly everyday, for the #OccupyNASS 2026 protest, it is clear that the “Sòrò Sókè” generation isn’t just speaking; they are demanding a seat at the table.
The Shadow of EndSARS: A Legacy of Resilience
To understand this movement, we must look back at October 2020. The #EndSARS protests were a turning point in Nigerian history. It was a moment when the youth stood up against the brutality of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad.
However, that bravery was met with the darkness of the Lekki Toll Gate incident. Many activists point to the current President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the De Facto Governor of Lagos and the former President Muhammadu Buhari, as the architects of a period where the state prioritized control over the lives of its children. Buhari’s administration ushered Tinubu into Aso Rock, cementing a lineage of power that many feel is built on a disregard for civic lives.

The #OccupyNASS 2026 Reality Check
Today, the dynamic has shifted. President Tinubu faces a new, more complex challenge. Unlike 2020, the world is watching with more than just social media hashtags.
Led by activists like Aisha Yesufu, Randy-Peter Akah (Peter4Nigeria), Precious Oruche (Mama Pee) and a host of other Nigeria Youths, the #OccupyNASS protest is laser-focused on a single, transformative demand: The mandatory electronic transmission of election results from polling units.
“Transparency is not a request; it is a right. We will not allow the 2027 elections to be decided in darkened rooms.” — Voices from the #OccupyNASS frontlines.

The Global Factor: US Boots on Ground
Perhaps the most significant difference in 2026 is the physical presence of the U.S. Military on Nigerian soil. Following the Christmas Day 2025 airstrikes in Sokoto and the confirmed deployment of an AFRICOM “small team” this February, the geopolitical landscape has changed.
While the Nigerian Defence Headquarters insists these troops are strictly for “intelligence and capacity building,” the historical context cannot be ignored. The U.S. has a long-standing history of acting against dictatorships when they cross the line into humanitarian catastrophes.
With U.S. General Dagvin Anderson meeting with Tinubu at Aso Rock just recently, the administration is in a tight spot. If the Nigerian government attempts to suppress #OccupyNASS peaceful protesters with the same lethal force seen during EndSARS, they are doing so under the direct gaze of the world’s most powerful military force. The U.S. presence acts as a massive deterrent; any attempt to “neutralize” the youth by launching a Military offensive could lead to the international community, and the troops already in the country neutralizing the administration, and likely implementing a forceful change of regime. Essentially, Tinubu will NOT get away with Killing of Nigeria Youths again like they did in 20.10.20.
The Request is Simple: Mandatory E-Transmission
The protesters at the National Assembly are not asking for a change of Government; they are asking for math. The Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2022 must include:
- Real-time uploads: Sending results directly from the Polling Unit to the IReV portal.
- Legal Mandate: Removing the “discretionary” language that allows for manual manipulation.
- Civic Transparency: Ensuring every Nigerian can verify their vote from their smartphone on the IRev Portal.
Final Thoughts: The Tide is Turning
The resilience of the Nigerian youth has transformed from a protest movement into a political force. Between the internal pressure of #OccupyNASS and the external presence of international military specialists, the old ways of “holding onto power at all costs” are becoming obsolete.
Nigeria is watching. The world is watching. And this time, the results will be transmitted for all to see.
